How Does ABS Work? Anti-Lock Brakes Explained

BrakesPublished June 23, 20251 min read

Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) help you keep control during hard stops, something Minnesota drivers appreciate every winter.

What ABS does

In a hard or panic stop, ABS rapidly pumps the brakes far faster than any driver could, preventing the wheels from locking up. That lets you keep steering control instead of skidding straight ahead.

What that pulsing pedal means

If you feel the brake pedal pulse during a hard stop, that's ABS working. Keep firm pressure on the pedal and steer. If your ABS warning light comes on, have the system checked so it's ready when you need it.

We diagnose and service ABS and the rest of your braking system. Stop in if that light is on.
